What I Offer

I have a real “sweet spot” for Bastrop

  • It’s where I launched and nurtured my business–“The Sugar Shack”—into a community landmark.
  • It’s where I devoted thousands of volunteer hours.
  • It’s where I have been blessed with friendships from all walks of life.
  • It’s where four generations of my family proudly call home.
  • It’s a special place and quality of life I want to nurture and protect for the generations to come.

I believe

we are at our best when we work together to address common challenges.  We all own Bastrop and have a stake in its future; each of us should be engaged in pointing the direction and contributing our energies and resources toward that destination.

I know how

to bring together people…whether it’s organizing a Lighted Christmas Parade of 100-plus entries, unifying the business community, pulling volunteer initiatives together, serving on boards and commissions, or resolving conflict.

I can make hard decisions

whether it’s determining the best path forward, weighing the best use of resources, planning in the midst of uncertainty, or finding footing in tough times.

And I bring hands-on experience…

  • Over 31 years of small business knowledge, including nine years in restaurant management followed by 22 years as founder/owner/operator of The Sugar Shack, a Bastrop treasure.
  • A charter (and continuing) member of the Downtown Business Alliance, established in 2005. I have served on the DBA Steering Committee in 2006-12, as DBA Vice President in 2008-09, as President in 2010-12.
  • A member of the Bastrop County Emergency Food Pantry Board from 2008-10, including its Board Chair in 2009-10.
  • Service on the Bastrop Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors from 2009-15 and two terms as Board Chair, in 2011 and 2014.
  • An officer of the Pine Forest Property Owners Association. 2014-17: its secretary, 2014-16, and Vice President, 2017.
  • A member of the Bastrop Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors, 2017 to present.
  • A member of the Bastrop High School Theatre Booster Club, 2017 to present.
  • Married to my husband Cliff, a police officer, for 29 years.
  • Raising my “tribe”—with Cliff and with my mother Diane, a committed Bastrop volunteer as well—two daughters, a son, five grandchildren (and another on the way).

And a few really sweet moments as well

  • Recognition of The Sugar Shack as the Texas Tri-County Small Business of the Year (2010) and the Bastrop Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year (2016) and named “Best of Bastrop” Gift Store for eight years.
  • Invited by the Texas Downtown Association to speak at its annual meeting on the how to create a successful downtown business alliance of its own.
  • Accorded a “Legion of Honor” award in 2009 by the Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation, a national organization that advocates for cultural harmony and religious tolerance and annually singles out those who demonstrate “a giving spirit and unconditional service to the community, nation, and humanity.…”
  • Recognition as a “Point of Light” (2007) and “Citizen of the Year” (2010) by the Bastrop Chamber of Commerce.’
  • Received the “Straight Shooter Award” (2011) from the Bastrop Rotary Club.
